Each January a committee from the American Library Association (ALA) selects the official Newbery Award and Honor books for "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year." Our book club will read and suggest books we think deserve this award (based on the Newbery criteria) and then, in January, vote for our pick for the Bayside Mock Newbery award.
This is a great blend of historical fiction (Vietnam War era), mystery, and adventure. It is written in verse which at first I thought would turn me off but each chapter changes and the verse flows with the action. I loved the characters, their family situations, and the details about the summer of 1968. It is all a very real snapshot of what life was like then. On top of all of that is a search for buried treasure that is fun, adventuresome, and very believable.
ReplyDeleteI think this book has a good shot at the Newbery.
This was a great book, it had an interesting time period also. It has a strange style of writing: verse, but it actually gave a lot of insight on all the characters and is easy to follow. I loved the reference to the strange idols at the time, and the maturing of the main character. The plot is fun, and a little bit exciting and magical, as they search for buried treasure
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a fun and exciting book also. I liked how the author made a serious topic a little brighter and less depressing. I agree that the time period is interesting and I have noticed that several new books are set during the Vietnam War.
