Each January a committee from the American Library Association (ALA) selects the official Newbery Award and Honor books for "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year."
Our book club will read and suggest books we think deserve this award (based on the Newbery criteria) and then, in January, vote for our pick for the Bayside Mock Newbery award.

Traveling the Freedom Road by Linda Barrett Osborne
Collects accounts from slave narratives, journals, diaries, and other sources to provide a first-person perspective on the antebellum South, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
The awards were announced on January 18th, at the American Library Association's Winter Convention.

I think this book is sad but its still a really touching book to read. It makes you think about the past and how slavery wasn't right.
