The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

In a polygamous cult in the desert, Kyra, not yet fourteen, sees being chosen to be the seventh wife of her uncle as just punishment for having read books and kissed a boy in violation of Prophet Childs' teachings, and is torn between facing her fate and running away from all that she knows and loves.

Cults fiction | young adult, grades 7-10

  1. This is an amazing look at life in a cult. The 13 year old narrator will break your heart and yet there is also hope. This is a powerful, compelling book.

I don't think it will be up for the Newbery because its audience is more young adult. It will be interesting to see if it is up for a Prinz award.

  2. I loved this book! I thought the setting was very detailed and I enjoyed the strong theme in this book. It teaches readers to follow what you feel is right and to have hope. I really felt I was in Kyra's mind. The charactors weren't devoloped very well and I do agree it is more for young adults. Although, I enjoyed it and recomend it to other readers. -kg

  3. This was a heart wrenching novel that captivated and disgusted me throughout the whole book. Kyra's insight and spirit was truly inspiring, and terrible at the same time. It also gives insight to the fact that difficult situations, such as this one, aren't always black and white. They are almost always gray. There is not win win situation, you're always gonna lose, but the question that was posed was which loss is worse; the loss of family and everything you know (even though it is awful) or to run away from your family and the horrible situation forever and start a frightening new life in a world you know nothing about? This book was one of my favorites , but it is rather ya.

  4. I just finished this. It's too YA for the Newberry, but The Printz Award wouns possible. It has the reader trying to choose the "lesser of two evils" throughout the book, and trying to justify right from wrong. The Chosen One is very thought provoking and, as Anna said, it's not just black and white. The worst part was the end - it didn't tell me anything!!!!

  5. Hate to use texting language here but OMG I can not believe that this kind of thing can really happen to people!!! Although i loved this book, the horrors of it left me shaken for a while. I can't imagine having to get married at 13 or having 18 siblings for that matter. Although to old for the Newberry(as Amy pointed out), and tragic at parts, this is an amazing story about how if you really want something with all your heart, anything is possible, it just comes at high prices.
