  1. The author does a very nice job of developing the main character Lucky in this book. Actually, she does a nice job developing a lot of the characters. The story is a continuation of Lucky and Brigette's life in the desert town of Pan in California. Paloma, Lucky's new best friend, is introduced in this book as well. The story is very cute, but I feel it lacks plot development.

Readers may also be a bit confused at first as to how Lucky came to live with Brigette. There is a hint of Lucky's father mentioned in the story, but this book does not clearly define what happened with her father. That background is in the first book, The Higher Power of Lucky. Since a Newbery winner must be able to stand on its own and have good plot development, I am going to say that even though this is a quick read and cute story, it probably will not win the Newbery.
